2008 Reports

Anglesey

The Chandler brothers were racing last weekend at the recently renovated Ty Croes race circuit on Anglesey. With the sun shining and no wind it was set to be an excellent weekend of racing.

Having set the second fastest time in Saturday qualifying the pair were confident that they could gain some valuable point to keep them at the top of the British F350 championship.

Unfortunately in the first race a blocked fuel filter prevented the bike from running properly on the faster parts of the circuit and despite some very hard riding the pair could only manage a 4th place.

Having fixed the problem on Saturday night the bike ran perfectly in the Sunday practice and the pair got a flying start in the first race of the day to lead for a couple of laps before Steve Brooks their closest rival came through and held on to the lead for the win, with the Chandlers coming in second. The race however proved to be very exciting with the Chandlers more than matching the pace and swapping places with a number of much bigger engined bikes.

The second race ran similar to the first however for some reason the organisers decided to put the Chandlers and Brooks on the back of the grid. From the off both teams were charging and soon made it to the front of the field and swapped the lead 3 times before Brooks managed to pass and keep the lead to the end. This time with a much smaller margin.

Mark Win of Piranha Promotions sponsor of Chandler Racing said “ The lads did really well and this was the best race of the year” “ We are proud to sponsor them and be part of the team”.

This maintains the Chandlers lead at the top of the table with just two rounds to go.

Thanks go to. All our sponsors and families for their continued support.

The next outing for the Chandlers is the Sidecar Festival at Mallory Park on the 5th October where they will be looking to extend their lead in the F350 championship and also take on the big boys on a 600cc bike kindly being loaned for the day for the F2 races.

Cadwell

The Chandler brothers take 2nd in British F350 championship

Sidecar racers Doug and John Chandler from Knaresborough were racing at Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire in the last round of the British F350 championship last weekend.

This was the first time Doug had been there since breaking his ankle in a fall on the notorious mountain back in may.

With a lead of 30 points over Steve Brooks the pair needed to win a couple of the 6 scheduled races or come at least 2nd to take the title.

However the bad luck demon that has appeared on and off throughout the season struck again on the Saturday morning as the pair could not get the bike to start and missed the practice/qualifying session and the first race.

With a few minutes to spare the pair got the bike going for the second race only to have it stop on the warm up lap. With Brookes having won the first 2 races it was looking unlikely that the pair could take the championship.

So in fading light and plummeting temperatures the pair lined up for the 3rd race on the back of the grid. But with a flying start and some aggressive riding the pair were soon up to second. However with a slight engine misfire on the long straits the pair could not reel in Brookes who was flying and took the win by 15 seconds.

Having worked on the bike overnight but unable to cure the misfire the pair again lined up on the back of the grid for the 3 races on the Sunday taking 2nd in all 3, each time narrowing the gap between them and Brookes, the last race having led for 3 laps from the start.

John said after the last race “it is very disappointing not to take the title but we are really pleased with our 2nd place in the championship. We set out at the start of the year to finish in the top 3 and to do this in our first full year of racing is brilliant”. “The competition has been fierce all year with 5 or 6 teams taking race wins”.

We would both like to thank our families for all their help and support through the year as without it we could not race.

We would also like to thank our sponsors.

Mallory

The Chandler brothers from Knaresborough were competing in the penultimate round of the British F350 championship this weekend which was held within the 14th annual Festival of Sidecars at Mallory Park. The pair went into this round leading the championship by 40 points.

Unfortunately due to torrential rain through the night the racing was held up in the morning, not getting underway till 12pm.

Having set a very fast time on qualifying the pair were on the 2nd row of the grid along side their main rival Steve Brooks. As the lights changed the chandlers got a flying start to lead into the first corner only to be overtaken by two much faster post classic bikes. Having lead Brookes for a lap he managed to pass and was then able to get past one of the post classics. With the post classics being slower through the corners this held up the chandlers long enough to allow Brooks to gain a good lead. Once the chandlers were past the post classic they made good progress but were unable to catch Brooks, coming in third overall and second in class.

With the rain stopped and wind increasing the track was drying quickly but still had patches of standing water so for the second race the chandlers chose to stay on the wet tyres while Brooks chose slicks.

Again the Chandlers got a good start but after the first lap is was clear they had made the wrong choice as the tyre’s started to overheat and loose grip. With brooks disappearing in the distance the Chandlers managed to hang on to second place once again but only just with the third place team only a couple of seconds behind.

The pair retained the championship lead but the margin is now down to 30 points. Going into the last round at Cadwell Park on the 18th and 19th October the pair need to come in at least 2nd in the 5 schedules races to take the title.

Thanks to Mark from Bridgeside Garrage for his help over the weekend. Thanks to Mark from Piranha promotions, Colin from Paul Yates tool hire, David from David Audsley hair dressing, Amy from Aims Health and Beauty, Mell from Wild Style tattoos.

Thanks also to our Families for their continued support.

Oulton

Chandler racing were back in action this weekend at Oulton park for the 3rd round of the British F350 championship.

However this was with a stand in passenger as Doug Chandler, having taken a tumble at Cadwell park 4 weeks earlier while racing for an other team was recovering from a badly broken ankle.

The new passenger Mark Lazenby from Knaresborough offered to stand in even though he had never raced before. After the race he said it was one of the most exhilarating things he had done and looked foreword to doing more races.

So with a steady practice the pair where on the 7th row of the grid for the first race which saw 32 sidecars lined up for the off, however as the flag dropped for the start of the warm up the bike cut out due to a fuel line problem.

Having not finished the first race the pair had to stat from the back of the grid for the 2nd race but with a flying start the pair was mid field by the first corner and settled into a good rhythm making up a few more places as the race progressed. As the chequered flag dropped the pair crossed the line 4th in class.

This was an excellent result and gave the chandler brothers enough points to stay second in the championship with plenty of time to get back on top.

The next round is mid July when Doug should be back in action.

Special thanks to Mark for standing in and Doug Chandler for getting the bike ready and taking it to Oulton park while John was on holiday. Thanks also to Shaun Latimer for driving the team truck and to Maggie for catering for the team and supporters. A great team effort.

Thanks to Amy Dodsworth and family from Aimes Health and Beauty, Collin from Paul Yates Tool Hire, Mick from Staiano Motorcycles, Mark from Bridgeside Garage and Mark Lazenby from Cathedral Carpets Ripon.

Teeside

After a problematic mid season the Chandler brothers from Knaresborough were back on top form this weekend with 3 wins out of 3 races in the latest round of the FSRA British F350 championship at Teesside Autodrome.

From starting from the back of the grid in the first race the pair made quick progress through the field of 350cc, 750cc and 1100cc machines to be lying 1st in class and 3rd overall with one lap to go. Having diced with the 1100cc bike in front of them all the race they were able to make a pass on the last lap and hold out for the second place overall and first in class.

This finish put the chandlers on the front row of the grid for the second race and with a good start they were dicing for second place until a slight mishap on one of the sharper corners put them back slightly. The pair set off in pursuit and reeled in the second place bike but weren’t able to pass it, loosing the second place spot by just 1 second. This being a first in class and third overall.

For the third and last race of the day the Chandlers were back on the front row of the grid but didn’t make a great start allowing 3 bikes to get in front of them at the first corner. Having picked off the 3rd place bike with some seriously late braking in to the hairpin the pair had some ground to make up to catch the 2nd place bike. Having made up the ground they made a heart-stopping crowd pleasing dive down the inside on a very fast lefthander to take second place which they hung on to till the end. Again a well deserved first in class and third overall.

This haul of points puts the brothers 62 points in the lead of the championship with 3 rounds to go.

Doug and John would like to say a special thank you to their families and all our supporters who braved the morning showers and wind to come and watch. Also to our sponsors Bev, Brian and Amy from Aimes Health and Beauty and David Audsley of David Audsley Hairdressing, Mel from Wildstyle Tattoos, Colin from Paul Yates Tool Hire, Mark from Bridgeside Garage and Mark from Piranha promotions.

2007 Reports

Cadwell Park

Having suffered from mechanical problems on and off throughout the season Knaresborough sidecar racers Doug and John Chandler had hoped that their outing to the Festival of Sidecars on the 7th October, was going to be trouble free. Unfortunately the bad luck struck again and the pair only managed to finish one of the four races they started, coming home 4th despite a fuel problem.

So with only a week to prepare the bike the pairs next outing was at Cadwell Park , in Lincolnshire for a two day meeting.

Having changed most of the fuel system, the bike was running better and a 3rd place was achieved in the first race and in the second race after a race long battle a second place was achieved. On the second days racing, having done some more work on the bike the pair were flying and took 8 seconds of their lap times from the day before.

This culminated in them taking second place in both races, loosing to the first place bike in the later by just 0.8 of a second.

These good results elevated them to take 5th place in the British FSRA F350 championship having only done 5 of the eleven rounds.

Doug Chandler commented, “we are really pleased with our results this weekend and are now looking forward to the next seasons championship. We are confident that we can finish in the top three”.

To help them compete next season and improve on this season the pair are now looking for additional corporate sponsors also a workshop/lock-up to prepare the bike. This would be in return for advertising space on the bike and trailer, tickets to races etc.

If you would be interested in helping either financially or with a workshop pleas email john@chandler-racing.co.uk

Also a special thank you to Sharon Chandler, Doug’s wife and to Maggie Chandler, John’s wife for their help and support over the season.

Plumb Pudding meeting

Sidecar racing brothers Doug and John Chandler, from Knaresborough, were back in action on boxing day for the annual Plumb Pudding meeting held at Mallory Park , Leicestershire. The meeting being purely a social gathering with no championship points at stake, just pride.

The weather was good, with bright sunshine if a little cold and after the first practice session things were looking good despite being the only 350cc bike on the grid, the rest being 600cc and 1000cc.

With a good start the pair were said by a number of the crowd to “flying” and it soon became clear that some good results could be had. Out of 15 starters and from the middle of the grid, the pair had a race long battle with a couple of bikes that should have beaten them hands down and a very creditable 8th place was achieved in the first race.

The second race was similar with a 6th place looking likely when the clutch broke, for the 3rd time this season. Despite this the pair managed to limp home in 12th.

These results are excellent and have given the whole team a new found enthusiasm to take into next season. The pair will be competing in the British FSRA F350 championship and looking to improve on their 5th place from this year.

Team Mechanic Nigel Batchelor said, we are now in the process of re-building the bike with new suspension and engine. This will allow the guys to ride it much faster and coupled with their growing skill should allow for a top 3 placing next year.

A very special thank you to Sharon and Maggie for allowing us to race on Boxing day and thanks to our girls for their support.

Ty Croes circuit on Angelsey
Having repaired the broken gearbox from the last outing, Sidecar racers Doug and John Chandler from Knaresborough were looking forward to their latest race meeting with confidence. This was a two day meeting at the new Ty Croes circuit on Angelsey. Saturday being open practice and Sunday being the race day.

This confidence was not misplaced as their lap times consistently got quicker throughout Saturday, culminating in them taking 2nd fastest in timed practice to but them 2nd 350 on the grid out of 9, 350’s and 16th overall out of 31. This was a very creditable performance given the amount of much bigger engined bikes behind them.

However with about ten minutes to go to the race the heavens opened and the rain poured. With only a short time to get sorted the pair decided to change just the rear tyre to a wet, and left the front and chair slicks. This worked really well and the pair got a very good start until while in 2nd place a recurring problem of the throttles sticking due to too much rain forced an early retirement.

This problem was sorted for the second race but again the bad luck struck and the pair had to retire early from the race.

All in all it was a good weekend despite two DNF’s. the pair go into the final 2 round having shown they have the ability to stay with and in some cases beet the seasoned 350 sidecar crews.

The next race is the festival of sidecars where they are not only racing in the f350 races but also in the F2 class.

Knaresborough sidecar racers Doug and John Chandler had a lot to be pleased about at the weekend despite a couple of mechanical problems and torrential rain.

The pair were making their debut in the FSRA F350 British Championship at Oulton Park, Cheshire. On a new bike.

However, in the morning practice and in the first race the bike suffered a couple of minor technical problems which meant the pair had to retire to the pits for repairs.

As the start of the second race approached the rain which had been falling since 6am got worse and it looked like the meeting would be abandoned. But it gradually eased and the race commenced.

Due to the lack of practice the pair had to start on the back of the 18 strong grid made up mainly of 600 and 1000cc bikes with 5 350’s. Despite getting held up on the start line by a slow bike in front and a minor excursion on the grass at the chicane the race went well and an 11th place overall was achieved with a 3rd in the 350 class.

Doug said after “ it was a good first outing and we hope to build on this at our forthcoming meetings”.

Following their recent success at Oulton park, sidecar racers Doug and John Chandler were in action last weekend at Elvington Park near York.

In the rare bank holiday sun, the pair got off to a good start qualifying 4th fastest on the grid for the first race.

With a good start and the bike running well the pair were going well until the race was stopped on the 3rd lap due to a passenger tumbling from an outfit in front. Thankfully he only had minor injuries. Once again a good start was made at the re-start and the pair had a close race to come home a well deserved 3rd.

In the second race of the day things went a similar way to the first with a very good start and the race lead for a while. However as the race progressed two places were lost and a 3rd was looking likely when the gearbox broke, meaning retirement from the race and the meeting.

John said “ it’s a shame we had the problem with the gearbox as we were confident of a couple more finishes in the points”. “we now need to find the parts needed for the gearbox and have it fixed in time for the next meeting on the 15th/16th September at the new Ty Croes race track on Anglesey” “we’ve got our work cut out but it should be done in time”.

Scooter Sidecar – The Banana

As a way back into racing we raced a TZR125 engined sidecar in the BSSO F125 scooter series. This is surprisingly fast competitive racing and is reasonably cheap.

The engine was 170cc with race ignition, swarbrick pipe and big mikuni carb. The chassis was home made (not by us) and ran on mini wheels and race compound road tyres. Brakes were AP racing front and rear.
